RACE CANCELLED DUE TO HIGH SURF - RESCHEDULED TO NOVEMBER 14

The second race of the WaveChaser 2009-10 Winter Series returns to a favorite locale, Half Moon Bay, CA, on Saturday, November 7. The event will be staged from the Half Moon Bay Yacht Club and California Canoe & Kayak's Half Moon Bay location. Special thanks to CCK for hosting. Directions and maps can be found at: www.calkayak.com/hmb.cfm .

As with our past WaveChaser races, we'll be offering three courses: 2 mile novice course, 6 mile short course, and 10 mile long course. Generalized course descriptions can be found here. The exact routes will be set on race morning based on the conditions of the day. (Forecasts are calling for a large swell arriving on Saturday, but the wind forecast is mild.) Start times are 9:00am novice course, 10:00am short course, and 11:30am long course. Race includes a BBQ lunch and beverages on the newly renovated and expanded deck of the Half Moon Bay Yacht Club. The Yacht club has their no-host bar as well.

By special request, this is the first race with a 60+ age division for OC1's, so golden masters, show them what you got.

We'll raffle off a Kialoa paddle if we have at least 100 registered.

Fort Baker to Berkeley - Sunday, August 16th 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Saturday, 15 August 2009 16:00

The final race in the 2009 WaveChaser Summer Downwind Series is Sunday August 16. This point-to-point race starts from Fort Baker at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge, heads under the bridge toward Point Diablo, and then turns around for the long downwind run to OCSC Sailing in Berkeley. The course takes advantage of very consistent summer afternoon winds and is arguably the best downwind run in the Bay Area. This race covers much of the course to be used for the US Surfski Championships on the following weekend.

Registration is at the start area and will be open until 30 minutes prior to the first start time. Paddlers will be ceded into one of the two start times (1:10pm and 1:30pm). Lunch will be served at the finish.

Unlike our Winter Series races where we offer a variety of courses for all ability levels, our Summer Series only has the long course. Entrants should have the appropriate level of experience. Paddlers must wear their PFD and leash use is required.

Oyster Pt & Coyote Pt to BIAC - Sunday, July 5th 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Saturday, 04 July 2009 16:00

The WaveChaser Summer Downwind Series Oyster Point to BIAC and Coyote Point to BIAC races are Sunday July 5. The Summer Series courses and start times are designed to take advantage of the summer afternoon wind and waves in San Francisco Bay. The combination of a slight outgoing tide and afternoon winds are expected to whip up some nice waves to surf down the Bay. Unlike the WaveChaser Winter Series where we offer multiple race courses that cater to every paddler ability from novice to expert (see here), the summer series only has rough water long courses.

On Sunday we'll have two courses from which to choose: Oyster Point to Redwood City (the "extra long" course...approximately 17.5 miles) and Coyote Point to Redwood City (the "long" course...approximately 13 miles). The starting time for both races is 3pm. Race registration is only at the race finish location, and it is from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. A $5 per car entrance fee is required at Coyote Point for those without an annual pass.

The Redwood City finish location will be at Bair Island Aquatic Center (BIAC). The entry fee for all the races includes the post race party with food and beverages.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

As was done in 2007 and 2008, there will be qualifying time requirements to in order to participate in the Oyster Point course. To qualify to start at Oyster Point, one must have finished within 50% of the winning men's surfski time at the June 1, 2008, Coyote Point to BIAC downwind race or at the July 27, 2008, Fort Baker to Emeryville downwind race. This equates to faster than 2:14:52 at the June 1st Coyote Point race or faster than 2:04:23 at the July 27th Fort Baker race. (The results for these races can be found at http://www.wavechaser.com/race/0708/ .) If a paddler didn't enter either of these two races, he or she may request permission to start at Oyster Point by sending an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it on or before July 3. Include a resume with previous race experience.

The qualification times are being implemented for safety reasons. We believe that this will allow our safety boats to more easily keep track of the paddlers. The Coyote Point to Redwood City course is a great course, and many paddlers choose this course even though they are eligible to start at Oyster Point.

All paddlers must wear their PFD and use a leash.

A $5 per car entrance fee is required at Coyote Point for those without an annual pass.
