August 15 Fort Baker to Point Diablo to Berkeley (12.3 miles)

The final race in Northern California’s 2010 WaveChaser Summer Downwind Series is Sunday August 15. This point-to-point race starts from Fort Baker at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge, heads under the bridge toward Point Diablo, and then turns around for the long downwind run to OCSC Sailing in Berkeley (http://www.ocscsailing.com) . The course takes advantage of very consistent summer afternoon winds and is arguably the best downwind run in the Bay Area. This race covers much of the course to be used for the US Surfski Championships (http://www.ussurfski.com) on the following weekend.

Registration is at the start area and will be open until 45 minutes prior to the first start time. Paddlers will be ceded into one of the two start times (1:10pm and 1:30pm). Lunch will be served at the finish.

Unlike our Winter Series races where we offer a variety of courses for all ability level (see http://tinyurl.com/wavechaser-courses), our Summer Series only has the long course. Entrants should have the appropriate level of experience. Paddlers must wear their PFD and leash use is required.

July 25 Oyster Point and Coyote Point Downwind Races

Northern California’s WaveChaser Summer Downwind Series Oyster Point to BIAC and Coyote Point to BIAC races are Sunday July 25.  The Summer Series courses and start times are designed to take advantage of the summer afternoon wind and waves in San Francisco Bay.  The combination of a slight outgoing tide and afternoon winds are expected to whip up some nice waves to surf down the Bay.  Unlike the WaveChaser Winter Series where we offer multiple race courses that cater to every paddler ability from novice to expert (see http://tinyurl.com/wavechaser-courses), the summer series only has rough water long courses, and paddlers should have the appropriate level of ability.

On Sunday we'll have two courses from which to choose:  Oyster Point to Redwood City (the "extra long" course...approximately 17.5 miles) and Coyote Point to Redwood City (the "long" course...approximately 13 miles).  The starting time for both races is 3pm.  Race registration is only at the race finish location, and it is from 12:30pm to 1:30pm.  A $5 per car entrance fee is required at Coyote Point for those without an annual pass.

The Redwood City finish location will be at Bair Island Aquatic Center (BIAC). The entry fee for all the races includes the post race party with food and beverages.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

As has been done in the past, there will be qualifying time requirements in order to participate in the Oyster Point course.  To qualify to start at Oyster Point, one must have finished within 33% of the overall fasted time at a prior 2009 or 2010 WaveChaser downwind race.  For the Coyote Point WaveChaser downwind race on June 13, this would be a time of 2:08:50.  If a paddler didn't enter one of these races, he or she may request permission to start at Oyster Point by sending an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it on or before Friday.  Include a resume with previous race experience.

The qualification times are being implemented for safety reasons.  We believe that this will allow our safety boats to more easily keep track of the paddlers.  The Coyote Point to Redwood City course is a great course, and many paddlers choose this course even though they are eligible to start at Oyster Point.

All paddlers must wear their PFD and use a leash.

WAVECHASER SPRINT REGATTA - SUNDAY JULY 11

Here are the events for the Sunday sprint races at Quarry Lakes in Fremont.
For the onetime $20 entry fee, you may race as many events as you like.
Come on out and see how many races you can get in. Quarry Lakes is a very
spectator-friendly race venue. With dragonboat races running at the same
site on the same day, there will be plenty of people there to cheer you on.
This has been a pretty fun event in the past.

Based on the actual entries received on race day, it's possible that some
classes will be combined and the race schedule will then be adjusted
accordingly. We will raffle of paddles as prizes. The number of paddles to
be raffled off is dependent on the number of entries. Paddlers will be
awarded raffle tickets based on their placings in the races. Lunch will be
provided.

SUP demos by California Canoe & Kayak, Kenny Howell.

The first race will start at 9:00. We expect the last race to be complete
around 1:00.

The park fees collected at the park entrance include:
- a $5 per car fee
- a canoe/kayak inspection fee of $3 per car with canoes/kayaks

The canoe/kayak inspections are part of a program to prevent the spread of
invasive mussels. Additional info is available at
http://www.ebparks.org/inv asivemussels . In order to pass the inspection,
your canoe or kayak must be completely dry inside and out. This will be
strictly enforced by the park.

Coyote Point Downwind Race is June 13

The first race in the 2010 WaveChaser Summer Downwind Series is Sunday, June 13. This 13 mile race is from the marina at Coyote Point Recreation Area in San Mateo to Bair Island Aquatic Center in Redwood City http://routebuilder.org/1l6. This course takes advantage of very constant summer afternoon winds in San Francisco Bay, and is the most popular downwind run in the Bay Area.

Registration is at the start area and will be open until 30 minutes prior to the first start time. Paddlers will be ceded into one of the two start times (3:00pm and 3:30pm). A BBQ will be held at the finish.

Unlike our Winter Series races where we offer a variety of courses for all ability levels (see http://tinyurl.com/wavechaser-courses), our Summer Series only has the long rough water course. Entrants should have the appropriate level of experience. Paddlers must wear their PFD and leash use is required.

A $5 per car entrance fee is required at Coyote Point for those without an annual pass.

Here are links to the start and finish locations.
